PBIS- Positive Behavior Interventions Supports

What is PBIS?

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a 3 tiered framework that guides school teams in the selection, integration and implementation of evidence-based practices for improving academic, social and behavior outcomes for all students. The Supporting Alternatives for Fair Education (SAFE) Act, or Ohio House Bill 318, requires Ohio public schools to adopt policies and procedures regarding PBIS. PBIS is not a curriculum or a one-day training. Instead, PBIS is a systems change process that requires on-going commitment in order to create effective systems for teaching and addressing behavior and social-emotional skills. Initial and ongoing PBIS training and coaching is provided by a certified Ohio Master PBIS trainer and designed to provide the guidance and support necessary for creating sustainable change within school systems. There are multiple training options available for districts, depending on the assessed needs of individual districts as well as the level of and continuity of existing PBIS systems already in place.

Tier 1 Training

Tier 1 training provides an overview of the what, why, and how of PBIS as well as walks district level teams through building the foundational systems, collecting initial data to drive decision making, and implementing beginning practices that can help to support staff and students across all settings. As Tier 1 systems serve as the foundation upon which all other tiers are built, this 3 full days training is intended to be spaced out over the course of multiple months in order to allow teams to create and implement the Tier 1 framework practices as well as progress monitor for fidelity of implementation across buildings.

Tier 2 Training

Tier 2 training provides a detailed overview of the practices and systems used to provide targeted support for students who are not successful with Tier 1 supports alone. The focus is on supporting students who are at risk for developing more serious problem behavior before they start. Like Tier 1, this 3 full day training is intended to be spaced out over the course of multiple months in order to allow teams to create and implement Tier 2 framework practices as well as progress monitor for fidelity of implementation across buildings. A district's Tier 1 system must be operating with continuity and fidelity across the district, which may result in a several year gap between Tier 1 training and Tier 2 training.

Tier 3 Training

Tier 3 training will provide a detailed overview of the systems and practices used to provide targeted support for those students who need more intense, individualized supports than those provided by Tier 1 and Tier 2. This PBIS training is anticipated to be available in the fall of 2023.
