Child Find and Comprehensive Evaluations

We provide preschool evaluations and special education services for children living in Granville, Heath, Licking Valley, North Fork and Johnstown School Districts.

Child find is the process of identifying, locating and evaluating all children from age three to twenty one who may have a disability and be in need of special education and related services, regardless of the severity of the disability.
We are a central contact point in Licking County for Child Find activities and referrals for children who are suspected of having a disability.

Our evaluation process includes observations and assessments conducted by an evaluation team and input collected by the child's caregivers. The evaluation team may consist of a school psychologist, intervention specialist, speech and language pathologist, occupational therapist and physical therapist.
The parent/guardian is an essential member of the evaluation team. An evaluation team meeting is held to discuss and review the evaluation results and determine if the child qualifies to receive special education services.

We offer a continuum of services in our program. Children can receive services in an integrated preschool classroom setting or itinerantly.

Special Education Classrooms taught by an intervention specialist. Classrooms consist of 14 students with more than 50% of the students with disabilities and less than 50% of the students typically developing peers

Integrated Preschool Classrooms - taught by an intervention specialist and/or dual licensed teacher. Classrooms consist of 16 students with 50% students with disabilities and 50% typically developing peers. Therapies are provided within the school setting and are part of the school day. There is no tuition fee for children with disabilities to attend Flying Colors. There is a tuition fee for students who are typical peer models.

Itinerant Services - may be provided in a regular early childhood classroom, a community preschool or day care program or in the child's home environment.

If you have concerns about your child's development contact us at 740-349-1629 to discuss your concerns and to schedule a developmental screening.

Early Childhood Education Classrooms - We serve all preschool students living in Licking County and surrounding counties. Free and low cost tuition available for families who qualify for the Early Childhood Education Grant.

School Wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports - We use a comprehensive system to promote positive behavior and interactions among students and have tiered levels of programs to help children develop social skills.

Selected students may be selected to participate in a social behavioral program called The Incredible Years Dinosaur School®  during school hours to learn socially appropriate behavior and emotional responses to common social situations. A specific evidenced based social skill curriculum is utilized. The skills are carried over to the classroom and "homework" is provided to inform parents and for practice in the home and community.

Autism Services and Social Skills Interventions - We provide comprehensive, social-behavioral program for students, ages 2 ½ – 6, who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, and/or significant communication and social emotional deficits. Our program uses the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and play therapy to increase children's socialization, communication and attending skills and to decrease inappropriate behaviors. Direct one on one group intervention is provided by staff members who have been trained in ABA, Discrete Trial Therapy, Positive Behavior Support, Relationship-based Intervention and Picture Exchange Communication System. Teaching methods and behavioral strategies are individualized and adjusted regularly to meet the needs of each child.

Our focus is 1) to increase each child's competence, confidence and independence in group and social situations; 2) lay the foundation for each child to become a productive, happy and functioning member of society in an intrinsically fulfilling way and; 3) to capitalize on each child's natural strengths and interests, while teaching new strategies for addressing weaker areas.

A team of professionals collaborate regularly to ensure that the socialization, play, communication, and behavioral needs of the child are being addressed across both home and school environments.
